Van Gogh "Starry Night" Needlepoint Kit - Stitch Guide

If you love the movement and expressive brushstrokes of Van Gogh’s Starry Night, you’re going to adore how beautifully this canvas translates into needlepoint, especially when stitched entirely in Long Stitch!

For this piece, our studio manager Filipa created a richly textured version using nothing but this stitch, resulting in a stunning, flowing interpretation of the artwork.

This guide will walk you through her process, tips, stitch direction ideas, and how you can recreate (or personalize!) your own version.

Why Long Stitch Works So Well for “Starry Night”

Long Stitch is the perfect match for this canvas because it allows you to:

  • Bring out the swirling motion of the sky

  • Create bold, dimensional texture

  • Work intuitively by following the flow of the artwork

  • Finish faster than with tent stitch because it's ideal for larger areas

Filipa leaned into the painterly feel of the original design by letting her stitches follow the natural curves and energy of the piece!

“Painting With Threads”

Instead of using multiple stitch types, you can commit fully to Long Stitch. Although it's just one stitch, you can create a lot of depth and visual interest when using it intentionally.

The process focuses on:

  • Stitch direction: always following the movement of each swirled section

  • Color transitions: letting adjacent long stitches blend the blues and yellows together

  • Varying length: shorter where details are tighter, longer where movement is broader

  • Consistency of tension: keeping stitches even so the texture looks smooth and deliberate

How to Long Stitch (Quick Refresher)

If you’re new to Long Stitch or want a technique refresh, we actually have multiple video tutorials dedicated to this stitch, which is one of our favorites ever!

Long Stitch Diagram

Here's the illustrated diagram for the long stitch, but remember that varying length and overlaying stitches is possible, so don't look at this as a strick guide!

Can Beginners Stitch This Version? Absolutely.

Even though it's categorized as "advanced" on our website, this long stitch technique relies on:

  • Just one stitch

  • Repetitive hand movement

  • An intuitive sense of direction

Many beginners actually find Long Stitch easier than tent stitch on large backgrounds because it’s faster and more fluid!

This project can be a great entry point into textured needlepoint :)
