- What it is: Six free downloadable needlepoint alphabets (letters and numbers) in different styles, for personalizing your projects.
- Best for: Adding names, initials, dates or short sentences to needlepoint stockings, ornaments, cushions, key fobs and more.
- Skill level: Beginner-friendly. Works on any canvas mesh, and the same grid works for counted cross stitch too.
A needlepoint alphabet chart is a stitchable grid of letters and numbers: each square on the chart is one stitch on your canvas. Use it to sign your work, stitch a name on a Christmas stocking, add an initial to an ornament or turn a favorite phrase into a cushion, and your piece becomes something only you could have made.

How big will my letters be? Letter size by canvas mesh
You can use the charts on any canvas, but the same word comes out smaller on a fine canvas and larger on a coarse one. The rule is simple: letter height in inches = number of stitches tall ÷ canvas mesh (mesh = holes per inch). Count how many squares tall a letter is on the chart, then check the table:
| Letter height on the chart | 10 mesh | 13 mesh | 14 mesh | 18 mesh |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 stitches | 0.70 in (1.8 cm) | 0.54 in (1.4 cm) | 0.50 in (1.3 cm) | 0.39 in (1.0 cm) |
| 9 stitches | 0.90 in (2.3 cm) | 0.69 in (1.8 cm) | 0.64 in (1.6 cm) | 0.50 in (1.3 cm) |
| 12 stitches | 1.20 in (3.0 cm) | 0.92 in (2.3 cm) | 0.86 in (2.2 cm) | 0.67 in (1.7 cm) |
| 15 stitches | 1.50 in (3.8 cm) | 1.15 in (2.9 cm) | 1.07 in (2.7 cm) | 0.83 in (2.1 cm) |
Width works the same way: add up the stitches across each letter, plus one empty stitch between letters and two or three between words, then divide by the mesh. Most of our kits use 13-mesh canvas; check the "Canvas Mesh Size" on your kit's product page.
How to plan and center a name or phrase
- Write it out on the chart first. Copy your letters onto squared paper (or a grid app), leaving one blank square between letters and two or three between words.
- Count the total width and height in stitches and compare it with the space on your canvas. If it doesn't fit, choose a smaller alphabet, shorten the word, or split it into two lines.
- Find the center. Count the canvas threads across the area you're filling and mark the middle lightly, then do the same for the middle of your word.
- Stitch from the center out, starting with the middle letter, so the name stays centered even if you miscount by one.

The best stitch for needlepoint letters
- Use tent stitch for the letters. Small letters are often only one stitch wide, so the continental version of tent stitch keeps every line crisp and readable. Decorative stitches are too big for small text.
- Stitch the letters before the background, so you can see exactly where each one sits, then fill around them.
- Choose a color with strong contrast against the background: a dark name on a light ground, or the other way round.
- Want sharper edges? Once the background is done, you can outline the letters with a backstitch on top.
What to personalize with your alphabet chart
Lettering turns a kit into a keepsake. Our favorites:
- Christmas stockings: a name on the cuff, ready for the mantel every December. Prefer not to plan the letters yourself? On our stocking kits you can add our personalization service and we'll email you a PDF diagram of the name on the design.
- Ornaments: an initial or a year, perfect for a baby's first Christmas.
- Pillows: a favorite phrase or a date to remember. Our "Chilling Spell" personalizable cushion kit leaves space for whatever you want to say.

The "Yes, I am" key fob: stitch the word you need
We created the "Yes, I am" needlepoint key fob for World Mental Health Day 2026. One side says "yes, I am"; the other is left blank for you to stitch the word you most need to hear right now, and carry it with you every day.

FAQ
Are the needlepoint alphabet charts really free?
Yes. All six alphabets are free to download as one PDF.
Will my letters be the same size on any canvas?
No. The finished size depends on the canvas mesh: the same word comes out smaller on 18 mesh and larger on 10 mesh. Divide the number of stitches by the mesh to get the size in inches, and always plan your text before you start.
What is the best stitch for needlepoint letters?
Tent stitch, usually the continental version, because it works neatly in single rows and keeps small letters readable. Stitch the letters first, then the background.
How do I center a name on my canvas?
Count the width of your word in stitches (including one-stitch gaps between letters), find the middle of the word and the middle of the space on your canvas, and start stitching from the center letter outwards.
Can I use these charts for cross stitch?
Yes. Each square is one stitch, so the same alphabets work for counted cross stitch on Aida or evenweave fabric.
What products work best for needlepoint personalization?
Christmas stockings, ornaments and cushions are the most popular, because they become meaningful gifts and keepsakes. See our personalizable needlepoint kits.
Do I need special skills to use the alphabet chart?
No. The charts are beginner-friendly and work like any other needlepoint chart: follow the grid square by square to stitch your text.
