Diagonal Triple Parisian Stitch

The Diagonal Triple Parisian stitch is a variation of the Parisian stitch worked with diagonal stitches in groups of three: three long stitches over four canvas intersections, then three short stitches over two. The rows fit into each other, long stitches against short ones, creating a soft, rippling texture. It is also known as Sky Stitch, and it is a favourite for skies and water.

Diagonal Triple Parisian Stitch Instructions & Diagram

You can see the diagram of this stitch below.

  • Start with a group of three long diagonal stitches, side by side, each one over four canvas intersections.
  • Next to them, make a group of three short diagonal stitches, each one over two canvas intersections. Follow the diagram for the starting hole of each short group.
  • Keep alternating groups of three long and three short stitches until the end of the row.
  • On the next row, place the long stitches against the short stitches of the previous row, and the short stitches against the long ones, so the rows fit together.
  • Repeat until the area is filled.

Tips for a Perfect Diagonal Triple Parisian Stitch

  • Stitch the first row carefully. Every other row follows it, so count the long and short groups well before you continue, and compare it with the diagram.
  • Mind the canvas pull. The long diagonal stitches can distort the canvas on big areas. Keep a relaxed tension, consider working on stretcher bars, and block your canvas when you finish.
  • Play with shades. Changing to a lighter or darker shade every few rows turns this stitch into a gentle sky or a moving water surface.
  • Use it for big spaces. Its long stitches cover the canvas quickly, so it is a great choice when you have a large area to fill.

Diagonal Triple Parisian vs Parisian Stitch

  • Parisian stitch: single long and short stitches alternating one by one, for a small, regular texture.
  • Diagonal Triple Parisian (this page): diagonal stitches grouped in threes, for a bigger, wavier pattern that suggests movement.

Diagonal Triple Parisian Stitch FAQ

Why is it called Sky Stitch?

Because its soft, rippling texture is perfect for skies. It works just as well for water, like rivers, lakes and the sea.

Is the diagonal triple Parisian stitch hard to learn?

It's an intermediate stitch: you need to count carefully to keep the long and short groups in place, but once the first row is right, the next rows follow easily.

Does the diagonal triple Parisian stitch distort the canvas?

It can, because of its long diagonal stitches. Relaxed tension, stretcher bars and blocking your finished piece keep it square.
