Needlepoint Starter Kits - Level 1

Needlepoint is a type of hand embroidery stitched on a stiff, open-weave canvas. You usually cover the whole design area with stitches.

Cross stitch is worked on fabric (often Aida or linen) using X-shaped stitches, while embroidery is done on plain fabric with many different stitch types and the fabric itself stays visible.

Needlepoint feels more structured and is very beginner-friendly because the canvas has a clear grid to follow.

Overall, start with:

• Small designs that can be finished quickly (coasters, bookmarks, small wall art)
  
• Lower canvas counts (10–13 holes per inch) — easier on the eyes and faster to stitch
  
• Simple color palettes without lots of shading

Yes, absolutely! All kits come with a printed needlepoint booklet, which contains instructions on how to get started. No previous experience is necessary, as needlepoint kits typically include instructions and guidance for beginners! If you still have doubts, you should read about the benefits of needlepoint.

LEVEL 0 / STARTERS

If you are someone who is just starting to learn the basics of needlepoint, this level is for you. Kits at this stage are designed to help you feel confident from the start, with simple, small designs and no more than 3 colors. Perfect for learning the very basics, enjoying the process, and discovering the joy of stitching without feeling overwhelmed.

BEGINNER

If you have already had your very first go at needlepoint and are ready to learn the foundations, then Beginner is your level. Here you’ll start becoming familiar with essential stitches, materials, and tools, while exploring slightly bigger designs and more colors. These kits are still simple and approachable, but give you space to practice and build even more confidence.

CONFIDENT BEGINNER

If you have gained a little more experience and are comfortable with basic stitches and techniques, are beginning to experiment with different types of threads, colors, and textures, and your projects are becoming more complex, then Confident Beginner is your level.

INTERMEDIATE

If you have mastered basic stitches and are now moving into more advanced decorative stitches, are comfortable working with a variety of threads and mesh canvases, and can tackle moderately complex patterns, then Intermediate is your level.

ADVANCED

If you are highly skilled and experienced, have mastered a wide range of stitches, and are able to stitch intricate and detailed designs, then Advanced is your level.

Our starter kits use DMC Soft Cotton or Pearl Cotton threads and a quality needlepoint canvas printed with the design.

We choose materials that are durable, colorfast and comfortable to stitch with, so your finished piece will last and look vibrant for years.

It depends on the size of the design and how often you stitch, but most beginners can finish a starter kit over a few relaxed stitching sessions (for example, a few evenings or weekends).

We intentionally choose projects that feel achievable, so you can enjoy the process and experience the satisfaction of finishing.

Many of our designs can be finished as pillows, ornaments, sunglasses cases, bookmarks, key fobs or framed pieces. You’ll find finishing tips and inspiration in our resources, and you can also take your stitched canvas to a local framer or upholsterer if you prefer professional finishing.
