Bargello Wave
The Bargello Wave Needlepoint Stitch is a decorative stitch used in needlepoint to create flowing, rhythmic wave-like patterns. This stitch produces a striking, continuous design that is perfect for adding movement, texture, and visual interest to your project. It’s especially beautiful when stitched with color gradients or variegated threads.

Bargello Wave Stitch Instructions
Horizontal variant:
-
Secure the thread at the back of the canvas by making a small knot or anchoring it under existing stitches.
-
Bring the needle to the front at your chosen starting point.
-
Make the first straight vertical stitch, skipping a set number of canvas threads (for example, 4 threads).
-
For the next stitch, move one hole to the right and adjust the stitch height by one thread—this starts the gradual incline of the wave.
-
Continue in this pattern, increasing the stitch height by one thread each time until you reach your highest point (e.g., skip 8 threads).
-
Once at the peak, reverse the process: decrease the stitch height by one thread per stitch, keeping the same spacing, until you return to your starting height.
-
Repeat the wave sequence across your row, keeping each stitch aligned for a smooth, rhythmic pattern.
-
Work the next row directly underneath, aligning the peaks and valleys for a continuous wave effect—or offset them for a more dynamic look.
Tips for Bargello Wave:
-
Color blending: Use gradient or ombré threads to enhance the wave effect.
-
Scale variation: Adjust the number of skipped threads to make larger or smaller waves.
-
Layering: Combine multiple Bargello Wave rows in different colors for depth and complexity.
-
Themed projects: Perfect for representing water, rolling hills, or abstract designs.
