Brick Stitch (plus Brick Horizontal, Double Brick Stitch)

The Brick Needlepoint Stitch is very simple and provides a nice texture.

  • Worked in a zigzag pattern in vertical or horizontal bands.
  • Each stitch is separated from its neighbor, hence the name brick stitch.

  • Secure your thread on the backside of the canvas by making a small knot.
  • Start stitching upwards by skipping two threads of canvas.
  • Then, go down to the lower right hole from where you started and repeat the process.
  • When you finish that stitch, you should move the needle to the right to the same height as the first stitch and repeat the process until the desired area is covered. This will create a zigzag effect.

Brick Horizontal Stitch

The Brick Horizontal Needlepoint Stitch is a variation of the traditional Brick Stitch and creates a pattern resembling horizontal rows of bricks.

    • Secure your thread on the backside of the canvas by making a small knot.
    • Insert the needle from the back of the canvas to the front at the starting point.
    • Make a horizontal stitch to the right, skipping a row.
    • Then repeat the same stitch in the next canvas hole at the bottom right.
    • Move the needle to the lower left canvas hole (same row as the first stitch) and repeat the process until the desired area is covered. This will create a zigzag effect.

     

    Double Brick Stitch

    The Double Brick Needlepoint Stitch is a variation of the basic Brick Stitch in needlepoint that creates a staggered pattern with larger blocks.

      • Secure your thread on the backside of the canvas by making a small knot.
      • Insert the needle from the back of the canvas to the front at the starting point.
      • Make a stitch by jumping two threads of the canvas or a line, then make another identical stitch next to it.
      • Then bring the needle diagonally down to the right and make two stitches equal to the previous ones but one row down. This will create a zigzag effect.
