Mosaic Stitch (plus Reverse Mosaic Stitch)
The Mosaic stitch is a small square needlepoint stitch made of three diagonal stitches (short, long, short) worked over a block of two by two canvas threads. Repeated side by side, these little squares create a neat, tiled texture that looks like a mosaic. It is quick to learn, covers the canvas well, and works for both small details and large backgrounds.

Mosaic Stitch Instructions & Diagram
You can see the diagram of this stitch below.
Row 1 (left to right):
- Make a downward diagonal stitch over one intersection.
- Move the needle to the right and make another parallel downward diagonal stitch, this time over two intersections, skipping one canvas hole in between.
- Make a third downward diagonal stitch over one intersection, like the first, but one row below the other two. This completes one mosaic square.
- Continue this sequence of three stitches across the row.
Row 2 (right to left):
- Make a small upward diagonal stitch, starting on the second hole down from the last stitch of the first row.
- Make an upward diagonal stitch to the left, skipping one canvas hole.
- Make another upward diagonal stitch over one intersection, starting on the first canvas hole below the first row.
- Continue this sequence of three stitches across the row, moving from right to left.
Next rows: stitch the third row exactly like the first one (left to right), the fourth like the second, and so on.

Reverse Mosaic Stitch
The steps of the Reverse Mosaic Stitch are the same as the original Mosaic Stitch. The difference is the direction of the stitches: the original mosaic slants from left to right, while the reverse mosaic slants from right to left. Both are worked from top to bottom. Alternating the two creates a subtle woven or pinwheel effect.
Reverse Mosaic Stitch Instructions
- Bring the needle up from the back of the canvas to the front.
- Go diagonally up one intersection to the left, then take the needle down to the back.
- Bring the needle back up in the hole immediately to the right of the first stitch.
- Go diagonally up over two intersections to the left, then take the needle down to the back.
- Bring the needle back up in the hole immediately above the third stitch position.
- Go diagonally up one intersection to the left and take the needle down to the back.
- Repeat until the row is complete.
Mosaic, Diagonal Mosaic or Mosaic Checker?
The mosaic family has a few close relatives, each with its own tutorial:
- Mosaic stitch (this page): little squares worked in horizontal rows, for an even tiled texture.
- Diagonal Mosaic stitch: the same short and long stitches worked in diagonal rows, which gives a gentle diagonal stripe.
- Mosaic Checker stitch: mosaic squares alternated with blocks of tent stitch, for a checkerboard pattern.
- Scotch stitch: the bigger version of the same idea, with larger squares.
Tips for a Perfect Mosaic Stitch
- Keep every square the same. Always stitch short, long, short in the same order and direction, so the tiles look uniform.
- Use it in small spaces. Because each square only covers two by two threads, mosaic is great for small shapes where bigger decorative stitches don't fit.
- Mix directions on purpose. Switching between mosaic and reverse mosaic in different areas adds texture and can help shapes stand out from the background.
- Relax the tension. Mosaic covers well, so there's no need to pull tight. Even, relaxed stitches keep the canvas flat.
Mosaic Stitch FAQ
Is the mosaic stitch good for beginners?
Yes. It's one of the easiest decorative stitches, as it only uses two stitch lengths in a small, repeating square.
How many canvas threads does a mosaic stitch cover?
Each mosaic square covers a block of two by two canvas threads.
Does the mosaic stitch distort the canvas?
Much less than long diagonal stitches, because the stitches are short. Working with relaxed tension, and blocking your finished piece, keeps it nice and square.
