The Bargello Wave Needlepoint Stitch is a decorative stitch used in needlepoint to create flowing, rhythmic wave-like patterns. This stitch produces a striking, continuous design that is perfect for adding movement, texture, and visual interest to your project. It’s especially beautiful when stitched with color gradients or variegated threads.

What is the Bargello Wave Stitch best used for?

Stitch Structure: Flat, Parallel, Repeating, Zig-Zag/Wave Pattern
Recommended for: Water, Borders, Backgrounds, Stylized Landscapes, Decorative Elements

How do you do the Bargello Wave Stitch? (Step-by-Step Guide)

  1. To start, secure the thread at the back of the canvas and bring the needle to the front at your chosen starting point.
  2. Make the first straight vertical stitch, skipping a set number of canvas holes, in this case I'm skipping three, but you can make it as long or as short as you want. Next, make another parallel stitch exactly like the first one.

  3. For the next stitch, move one hole to the right and adjust the stitch height by one hole, this starts the gradual incline of the wave.

  4. Do this one more time, adjusting the height by one hole and once again make another parallel stitch like the previous one.

  5. Then, make the exact same process, but by adjusting the height upwards instead of downwards on the canvas.

  6. Repeat the wave sequence across your row, keeping each stitch aligned for a smooth, rhythmic pattern.

  7. To work the next row, stitch the pattern directly underneath, aligning the peaks and valleys for a continuous wave effect.

4 Expert Tips for a Perfect Bargello Wave

  • Color blending: Use gradient or ombré threads to enhance the wave effect.

  • Scale variation: Adjust the number of skipped threads to make larger or smaller waves.

  • Layering: Combine multiple Bargello Wave rows in different colors for depth and complexity.

  • Themed projects: Perfect for representing water, rolling hills, or abstract designs.
