Some definitions of Stitch Structures to help you select your needlepoint stitches:

Orientation:

  • Straight: stitches that are completely vertical or horizontal across the canvas intersections.
  • Diagonal: stitches that are worked diagonally across the canvas intersections.
  • Parallel: parallel, straight stitches worked closely together in the same direction.

Pattern:

  • Pattern: combination of stitches repeated at regular intervals to create a pattern.
  • Composite Stitches: made up of two or more different stitches.

 Appearance:

  • Flat Stitch: it stays flat to the surface of the canvas.
  • Raised Stitch: oppositive to flat, where part of the stitch is raised from the surface of the canvas.
  • Crossed Stitch: when we have a part of the stitch that overlaps the next stitch, or when the stitch is created by overlapping flat stitches.
  • Chained: The thread forms a loop on the surface by taking the needle in and out of the canvas at the same point. The next stitch begins inside the previous loop.
  • Knotted: When a knot is created at the surface of the canvas, by creating a loop and then passing the thread through that loop.
  • Knitting: Stitches that resemble a knitting or woven pattern.
