How to Make a Needlepoint Patch - Video Tutorial

Here is the video tutorial with step by step instructions on how to finish this quick & fun needlepoint project!

Step 1: Stitch the Needlepoint Canvas

Start by selecting a needlepoint design that suits your style and preferences, keep in mind the size of the design and of the item you want to attach it to. We find that our Rainbow Heart and Love Party needlepoint kits are perfect for this purpose and these are the ones we feature in the video, but you can find more designs here. Take your time stitching to ensure that the stitches are neat and even, capturing the intricacy of the design.

Step 2: Blocking the canvas (if you need to!)

This is our bonus tip: blocking your design. Some of the most common stitches, such as Continental Tent Stitch, are very likely to distort your design, so to finish the patch it is important to do some blocking and guarantee that your canvas is straight and ready to go!

Read our article and watch our video tutorial to learn how to block your canvas properly!

Step 3: Do the Binding Stitch

Once you have completed the needlepoint design, it's time to add a neat and professional finish to the edges. Using a matching thread color, work the binding stitch around the entire perimeter of the design. This stitch not only secures the threads but also creates a clean and polished edge to protect the piece.

Watch our video tutorial to learn how to do the binding stitch:

  • in a square or rectangular canvas format
  • in an irregular or curvy canvas format

Step 4: Cut the Canvas

With the binding stitch in place and the blocking done, carefully cut away the excess canvas around the design, leaving a small border. Fold the edges of the canvas to the back of the design, creating a neat and hidden backing.

Step 6: Sew the Finished Piece into Your Desired Item

Using the thread, carefully sew the finished needlepoint patch onto your chosen item. Take note of the placement and ensure the patch is centered and securely attached. Start by doing some key stitches just to secure it in place, and then sew it all around with more precision and smaller distances between the stitches. Use small, discreet stitches to keep the focus on the design rather than the thread.

Creating a needlepoint patch is a delightful and rewarding craft that allows you to showcase your creativity and personal style. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can create unique and beautiful patches to adorn your belongings or share as thoughtful gifts!
